VOLUNTEER OFFICER'S DECORATION, (Great Britain type), with pin-back ribbon suspender. JSW in script on reverse. Engraved. In a case by R & S Garrard & Co, toned extremely fine.

Said to be awarded to Major James Sven Wigram in 1895 although the medal is hallmarked for London 1901 by maker R & S Garrard & Co.

James Sven Wigram, engineer, miner, architect, soldier and teacher, born 23Jan1841 at London, UK; arrived in Sydney, NSW in 1858; Enl.c1870 in 2 Bty NSW Volunteer Artillery Bde; to 3rd Lieut 04Feb1876; to NSW Regt Vol Arty 27Mar1879; to Lieut 09Jul1880; to Captain 17Mar1882; to Major 01May1894 with NSW Field Batteries and Garrison Coys; to Reserve List 01Sep1902 as Hon Lt-Col; to Retired List in 1907; Died 24Jan1914 at Marrickville, Sydney, NSW; Buried at Gore Hill Cemetery.
James Sven Wigram engaged in several mining projects in the western district of NSW after he arrived with his father in 1858. Later he took up building and contracting and was for some years involved with a firm of contractors operating in the northern districts of the colony. He then was appointed as a draughtsman in the office of Mr G. Allen Mansfield who was Architect for Public Schools under the Council of Education. After several years in that position he was appointed Chief Draughtsman under Mr Edward Kemp, the Architect of Public Schools.
