Courtesy National Library of New Zealand - Papers Past.^^The men who served as special constables during the strike are to be presented by the Citizens' Defence League with medals as a memento of the occasion. In the case of mounted specials a copper disc on a bronze background displays a special on horseback holding his baton. The words are "Special Constabulary, Mounted." On the reverse side are the city arms and the words. "Auckland, Nov., 1913.' In the case of foot specials, the mounted man is replaced by one on foot. It is intended to forward the medals to various centres for distribution to the special constables.^^13/454 Cpl William John Saxby, a farmer, served in the Auckland Mounted Rifles in WWI. He was wounded in action at the Dardanelles and returned to New Zealand at the end of October 1915 on the Tofua.
