MALVERN DISTRICT PLOUGHING MATCH, 1872, cast and hand engraved in silver (39mm), no maker, reverse inscribed 'Presented/To/John Searle/1st Prize/For/Best District Ploughman/26th July 1872'. Hairlines, nicely toned, good very fine.

A report on the competition stated that the Malvern district had been almost entirely known for its mineral resources. However it was now approaching to be one of the most important agricultural districts in the province with its flat land and the characteristics of its soil. In Class 1 - Single Furrow (All comers) competition the winning Ploughman was John Searle, the Plough Owner was John Searle and the Plough used was a Fraser. In the evening after the competition, the customary dinner was held at Willis' Hotel and prizes were presented by Mr. T.H.Anson.
