WANGANUI AGRICULTURAL & PASTORAL ASSOCIATION, dog collar chain with fitted key locking mechanism by Hiatt (no key included) and attached polished hand engraved name plaque (62x22mm), no maker, suspension holes at either side of plaque to fit collar chain, plaque inscribed 'First Prize Mr. W.F.Russell's/Gordon Setter "Roger"/1877'. Good fine.
This Annual Show was held at the Wanganui Racecourse in November 1877. Mr W.F.Russell brought his dogs out from England, having been selected there at considerable expense. News reports indicate that his dog, Roger, was nearly, if not quite, the best dog of its kind ever exhibited in New Zealand. In addition to winning the Class A prize with Roger, Mr Russell also secured second prize with another of his dogs named Laura and as well, Roger won the prize for Best Dog on the Ground.
