MAADI (BASE CAMP), Egypt, prize medal struck in silver (32mm), no maker, ring top suspension, reverse inscribed 'MAADI./N.Z. Camp./Champ/Backstroke/C.W.Martin/2" Sept. 41.'. Very fine.

Maadi, a district of Cairo, in Egypt was the location of a base camp for 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force in WW2. ^^17435 Pte Colin William Martin, Infantry Reinforcements, 2NZEF. He was a former Southland backstroke swimming champion who finished second in the New Zealand championships at Invercargill in 1939. In a news report by the Auckland Star dated 16 December 1944 it stated that Martin had won the Egyptian backstroke championship over 400 metres. The same report also stated that he had won the 100 metres backstroke title at the NZEF swimming championships.
