Bid at live.noble.com.au

PRE WWI, c1909, die struck and handcrafted voided silver badge (31mm), reverse of outer disc marked for Chester 1909 by maker 'W.Bs' (Ward Brothers), pin-back, obverse with raised letters around top band 'DREADNOUGHT', below is a handcrafted Dreadnought above hands shaking in friendship and below this inscribed on the outer band is a fern leaf at the left, what appears to be a rose at the right and in the centre is a representation of a Union Jack. Good very fine and scarce.

The Dreadnought was the top class of battleship prior to WWI. In 1909 the New Zealand Government advised the British Government that it was prepared to fund the construction of one such ship and then another if needed in the following year and the British Government accepted the generous offer. The above badge appears to be a recognition of the aforementioned friendly gesture.
