CROMWELL, handcrafted in voided gold (15ct, 9.22g, 28x42mm), by Murrell (E.Murrell, Nelson), ring top suspension, obverse inscribed 'Great/European/War/1914', reverse inscribed 'Presented/To/D.Varcoe/By the Citizens/of Cromwell/For/Service'; (Queenstown seven a-side football tournament) prize fob hand engraved in voided gold (9ct, 6.56g, 29x29.5mm), no maker, ring top suspension, obverse inscribed 'DV', reverse inscribed 'D.Varcoe,/Queenstown/7 A Side./1919.' The first toned, otherwise extremely fine. (2)
23/944 Rifleman Douglas Henry Varcoe, C Company, NZRB, 1st Battalion, embarked from New Zealand, 9 October 1915. Rifleman Varcoe was wounded in action on 19 July 1916, invalided home and discharged as medically unfit on 3 April 1917. He died on 21 December 1926 at the young age of 32.^^D.Varcoe played fullback for the Cromwell team which won the Queenstown 7 a-side tournament.
