MANGATOKI, handcrafted in gold (probably 9ct, 2.34g, 17x17mm), maker illegible, ring top suspension, obverse inscribed 'WAC', reverse inscribed 'To/W.A.Curteis/from (C'm M.P.S.)/Mangaloki (sic)/Returned/Soldiers/28.10.19'. Scratch through 10 of date, otherwise good fine.

Mr Curteis had been headmaster of the Mangatoki School for several years and was leaving to take up another appointment. He had also been Chairman of the Athletic Club.^ ^The following courtesy National Library of New Zealand - Papers Past, from Stratford Evening Post, Volume XXXIX, Issue 86, 30 October 1919:^^'At Mangatoki on Tuesday evening Mr and Mrs W. A. Curteis were entertained by the residents of the district. Mr Curteis has been appointed organising teacher under the Education Board after eight years' service as headmaster of the Mangatoki school. He was presented by the returned soldiers with a gold Albert, by the Athletic Society with a Morris chair, and by the residents with a cheque tor ?30.'
