In the Garrison Artillery Volunteers Belt Competition (A Class) fired in 1903 at 500 and 600 yards, 10 shots each, Petty Officers Mackie and Hood tied for second place but in a shoot-off Mackie won by one point. Second, third and fourth placegetters each received a gold star.^^At the Dunedin Defence Rifle Club annual general meeting held in September 1918 it was announced that the championship was won again by Rifleman Mackie and he also won three other competitions.^^At the West Taieri Defence Rifle Club competition held in May 1931 the winner of the gold medal was Rifleman R.Mackie of Dunedin Rifle Club. The final ten shots of the competition were fired in fading light but the veteran rifle shot, R.Mackie, established a record for the range when he scored ten consecutive bull's-eyes.
