At the sixth annual meeting of the Patea Rifle Association held at the local range on Saturday June 1922, the championship was won by Rifleman J.G.Ritchie of the Hawera Rifle Club. The prize was the Honeyfield Belt and a gold medal donated by Mr S.Whiteford. Although only 18 years of age Rifleman Ritchie shot consistently throughout beating all competitors including four previous winners of the championship. Reports at the time stated that this young man who was on the staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co, Hawera, would be heard of in the shooting world in the future. In Australia, J.G.Ritchie was a member of the Natives and Coorparoo Rifle Club in Queensland.
