NEW ZEALAND TRAINED MIDWIVES', Maternity badge in silver (27x35mm), by S.D. & Co (Stewart Dawson & Co), ring top suspension and brooch bar missing, reverse inscribed '178/Esther Homer/Auckland/1909'. Dent near mid-left edge, otherwise fine.

Nurse Esther Homer of Parnell died on 11 December 1940. She trained as a maternity nurse at St Helen's Hospital, Auckland. She was nurse to Sir Hugh Walpole, the famous novelist, when his father was vicar at Parnell. Nurse Homer was a foundation member of the Auckland Nursing Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade and remained a supporter until her death.
