MASONIC, Rotorua Lodge No 153, Past Master jewel in gold with ruby claw set on suspender bar (15ct, tot wt 23.03g, 56x41mm), no maker, reverse of jewel inscribed 'Presented To/Wor.Bro. George Urquhart P.M./W.M 1915-17/By The Bretheren Of/Lodge Rotorua No 153/Aug 1917'. In case of issue, ribbon damaged and pin-back suspender bar included but not attached, otherwise extremely fine.

George Urquhart of Rotorua was born in 1880 and came to New Zealand at an early age. He joined the civil service and in 1896 was appointed to a position in the Magistrate's Office at Auckland. He remained there until he received his law degree and then in 1904 he entered into legal practice at Rotorua as a barrister and solicitor. He was for two terms a member of the Borough Council and for part of this time was Deputy Mayor. He was on several organisations' committees including on the executive of the Rotorua Racing Club and the Society for the Protection of Women and Children and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Also, for thirty years he was secretary of the Presbyterian Church. George Urquhart died at Rotorua in March 1944.
