WELLINGTON ORPHANS' CLUB, c1915, struck in silver and blue enamel (33x28mm), by M&K Ld (Mayer & Kean, Wellington), ribbon and stick-pin backed suspension bar marked 'H.A.Shepherd'. Very fine.

The Wellington Orphans' Club, a men's only club, began in 1910, an offshoot of the Wellington Savage Club. The name Orphan alluded to the Greek god of music, Orpheus, and also to the fact that members were refused entry into the oversubscribed Savage Club. The club was regarded as a junior Savage Club with the aim of fostering musical and literary talent and promoting good fellowship as well as performing various charitable work.
