PLUNKET MEDAL, struck in silver (39mm), no maker, reverse inscribed 'Plunket Medal/Contest/in Oratory/Victoria/University College/R.J.Larkin./1934'. Small edge bump and some irregular toning, otherwise very fine.
The Plunket Medal contest was inaugurated in 1904 by Lord Plunket, Governor of New Zealand, under the auspices of the Victoria College Debating Society at Victoria University College in Wellington. Lord Plunket had previously laid the foundation stone of the College and he wanted to create a connection with the original Plunket Medal which was the most prized medal to be won in the Historical Society of Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. The medal had been founded in memory of the first Lord Plunket, an orator and statesman.^^The contest consists of eight contestants with prepared speeches on some notable man or woman in history. Mr R.J.Larkin, the winner of the 1934 medal, gave his speech on 'The Life of General R.E.Lee'.
