GIRTON COLLEGE, Medalist, 1913, hand engraved in gold 15ct, 17.27g, 31mm), no maker, scroll and ring top suspension and with two gold tassels hanging from suspension rings on bottom rim, obverse, inscribed with design of a lamp (the college crest), reverse inscribed 'Girton College/Dunedin/A.E.Crawford/Medalist/1913'; another identical but in silver; also Columba College school badge in silver (25x37mm), no maker, pin-back. Very fine - extremely fine.
Now Columba College, Dunedin, created from two earlier Dunedin girls' schools, Girton College and Braemar House. Girton College had been founded in 1886 by the first woman graduate of the University of Otago, Caroline Freeman, who later sold it to Frances Ross in 1891. Ross subsequently purchased Braemar House, combined it with Girton College, and became the first Head Mistress of the newly created Columba College.^^The Girton College crest was a silver lamp and the Columba College crest is a dove. The Latin name for Saint Columba means dove.^^The prizes for the 1913 year for Girton College were presented at the school break-up which was held at Burns Hall, Dunedin on 8 December with the Mayor in attendance and presenting a speech. In the Honours List for A Division, the Gold Medallist was Miss A.E.Crawford who was Dux of the college. She was also a Silver Medallist for elocution.^^Note: The college medal uses the word Medalist whereas the newspaper account of the prize distribution uses the word Medallist. Both spellings are acceptable.^^With research.
