PBC (PUKEKOHE BOWLING CLUB), Challenge Star badge in sterling silver and gold (31x31.5mm), no maker, pin-back, reverse inscribed 'Prestd By/W.Roulston/1912'. Toned, extremely fine.

The Pukekohe Bowling Club was established in 1911. W.Roulston was one of the Vice Presidents.^ ^From Pukekohe & Waiuku Times, Volume 1, Issue 3, 27 March 1912. Courtesy National Library of New Zealand - Papers Past.^^On the Pukekohe Bowling Green on Saturday the four promised Challenge Stars were formally presented by Mr W. Roulston. In accepting the Stars the President (Mr A. B. Barter) thanked the donor and said that although the game of bowls was not played for "considerations" trophies of this kind were a splendid incentive to keen play, not for the intrinsic value of the medals but for the honor of being the winners of them. He called for three cheers for Mr Roulston, which were heartily given. As Club officers, Messrs A. B. Barter (President), W. Roulston and F. Perkins (Vice-Presidents), and A. Grigor (Secretary), donned the Stars.^^Their possession was promptly challenged by Messrs Morgan, Egginton, D. Wily and H. Bockett (skip). A splendid game resulted. The Challengers started off with six on the first head, and at the eighteenth head the game stood: Challengers 20, Holders 16. After the twentieth head the Challengers were still 26, while the holders had advanced two points to 18. Two up and one head to go made it appear as if the Stars would presently change ownership, but the glorious uncertainty of the game was shown when the Holders, amidst much excitement, got three in and retained the coveted badges by 21 to 20. Mr Barter skippered the winning team.
