USS CO (UNION STEAM SHIP CO), centrepiece of officer's hat badge in gilt and enamel (30x27mm), no maker, fold-back prong fitting on reverse. Good very fine.
The Union Steam Ship Company or Union Line was started in Dunedin in 1875 and was, at one time, the largest shipping line in the southern hemisphere and New Zealand's largest private-sector employer. It was sold to P&O shipping group in 1917 and then in 1972 to an Australasian consortium. In late 1999 it was sold again and its assets disposed of in a break-up of the company.
