LESBOS, Mytilene, c. 521-478 B.C., electrum hekte (2.54 g), Bodenstedt dates 497 B.C., obv. head of roaring lion to right, rev. incuse head of calf to right, (S.4240, Bodenstedt 13 [noted as unlisted dies], SNG Cop. 301, Boston 1679ff., BMC 17ff., Weber 5603-4, SNG Fitz 4335). Extremely fine and scarce.

Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 93, lot 4853. Previously CNG Mail Bid Sale 75, May 23, 2007 (lot 351), with ticket. Similar examples occur in our sales 71 (Lot 4513) and 85 (lot 1449). Bodenstedt notes 140 examples of this spectacular type from 22 obverse dies. Many examples known are in published collections.
