SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS, (A.D. 193-211), silver denarius, Alexandria Mint, issued A.D. 195, (2.11 g), obv. laureate head of Septimius Severus to right, around IMP CAE L SE[P SEV PERT AVG], rev. around APOLLINI AVGVSTO, Apollo standing left, holding patera and lyre, (cf.S.6264, RIC 345, RSC 42a, BMC 320). Poorly struck and irregular edge as usual, very fine, some light encrustation and porosity, a very rare mint issue.
Ex Robert Kutcher Collection, (See Roger A. Bickford-Smith author of study of this series "The Imperial Mints in the East for Septimius Severus" in Rivista Italiana 1994/5); also coming from CNG eSale 148 (lot 350), September 20, 2006 and earlier from CNG Auction Sale 45 (lot 2171), 18 March 1998, with all relevant tickets. ^An issue of silver from one of several temporary mints in the east, Alexandria in Egypt struck coins for Pescennius Niger but went over to Severus in February 194. The issues small in number continued for a year from this mint.
