MID GROUP OF FOUR: 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Defence Medal 1939-45; War Medal 1939-45 with MID. All medals unnamed as issued. Swing mounted, toned good very fine.

Together with,^1) Document for award of Mention-in-Despatch for distinguished service, in standing frame under glass.^2) Letter from The War Office enclosing bronze Oak Leaf Emblem with advice on how it should be worn.^3) Identity Card, Army in India named to Capt Arthur Gordon Cheston and issued 17.8.43.^4) Various membership cards for clubs in India and other places as well as an Official Pass for Palestine issued 2.7.40 and various invitations and other documents.^5) Certificate from The St John Ambulance Association, Indian Branch, issued to Capt. Arthur Gordon Cheston for attending a Course of Instruction, dated 12 June 1944.^6) Program for the Order of Service and Procedure for the dedication of The Chapel of the Queen's Royal Regiment, Sunday 19 July 1959.^7) Several photos of Cheston in uniform.^MID: LG 30/12/1941 - to Lieutenant A.G.Cheston, The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey) for distinguished service.^Arthur Gordon Cheston was born on 6 October 1917. He was known as George while at school, but to all others as Gordon. When at school he excelled at maths and was interested in jazz as well as classical music. He joined the army on 4 September 1939, serving with The Queen's Royal Regiment. This included service at Tobruk and Syria. 2/Lt Cheston was in the Carrier Platoon of the battalion and at the Battle of Sidi Barrani he took a number of Italian prisoners and at Tobruk, along with Sgt Charlie Cronk and the Carrier Platoon, he showed great enterprise in engaging the more heavily armed armoured cars. For this action he was Mentioned in Despatches.^Towards the end of the war he was in Germany and met his future wife, Catherine who was working in the Control Commission. Later they married and Gordon started an accountancy practice. He retired to East Sussex and served for many years as secretary of the Hurst Johnian Club. He died in 2010.^With research.
