OBE GROUP OF SIX TO WIA: The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (Officer) (type 2 Civil); 1914-15 Star; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19; Efficiency Decoration (EIIR) with Australia suspender; Coronation Medal 1953. The first and last medals unnamed as issued, 57 S/Sjt C.J.Tonkin. 1/L.H.F.Amb. A.I.F. on second medal, Lieut. C.J.Tonkin. A.I.F. on third and fourth medals, 57 C.J.Tonkin on fifth medal. The second to fourth medals impressed, the fifth medal engraved. Swing mounted, toning, otherwise very fine - good very fine.

In recognition of his outstanding and devoted service to medicine.^Award of the Coronation Medal 1953 confirmed to Dr Cyril Joseph Tonkin, Physician to His Excellency the Governor of Victoria.^Cyril Joseph Tonkin, chemist, age 25, born at Inglewood, Vic; Enl.18Aug1914 at Melbourne, Vic as St/Sgt dispenser in 1LHF Amb, while serving in 28 Ambulance for 1 ? years; Emb.18Oct1914; invalided to England from Alexandria 23Sep1915; to MEF 30Nov1915; to Mena House, Cairo with hernia 28Aug1915; TOS 12MGC 19Mar1916; to 2/Lieut 21Mar1916; fractured bone in right leg, severe 22May1916; WIA GSW leg, mild 26Aug1916; to France 26Sep1916; ^to Lieut 09Oct1916; gassed at Bullecourt Apr1917; RTA 18Dec1917; Appt terminated 31Dec1917; 1925 Captain with AAMC Pharmaceutical Services; 1936 Major as Staff Officer Pharmaceutical Services AHQ 3MD; Died in 1985 aged 96.^The Cyril Tonkin Scholarship was endowed at the Victorian College of Pharmacy at Monash University in 1976 to promote innovation and leadership in the profession of pharmacy. Dr Tonkin excelled in his dual careers as a pharmacist and a doctor. He graduated from the Victorian College of Pharmacy in 1910 earning both the Intermediate Gold Medal in 1908 and the Final Examination Gold Medal in 1910. He worked as an assistant demonstrator at the college from 1910-12 at which time he enrolled as a medical student at Melbourne University. Unfortunately his medical studies were interrupted by WWI. After serving in the AIF he completed his medical studies in 1921. He also served as a Major at Army Headquarters until 1939 being Assistant Director General Medical Services. Dr Tonkin was a lecturer and examiner at the Victorian College of Pharmacy from 1920 to 1953. There is a portrait of Dr Tonkin at the College painted by L.Pendlebury in 1958.^With copy of Service File and considerable other research.
