DFM GROUP OF FIVE TO WIA: Distinguished Flying Medal (GVIR IND:IMP); 1939-45 Star; Pacific Star; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. AUS. 407633. Sgt. W.L.Allen. R.A.A.F. on first medal, 407633. W.L.Allen. on the last four medals. First medal engraved, other medals impressed. Display court mounted, hairlines, small mark on King's cheek on first medal, otherwise good very fine.
DFM: CAG No.331, 23/12/1942; Supplement to LG 18/12/1942, p5506.^Citation: Sergeant Allen has taken part continuously in air operations against the enemy and participated in raids. Whilst flying, he has displayed cool and distinguished conduct, and devotion to duty far beyond the ordinary. ^Recommendation: Sergeant Allen enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force as an aircrew trainee on 7 December 1940. He graduated with the rank of Temporary Sergeant on 25 July 1941. Sergeant Allen has taken part continuously in air operations against the enemy in the Darwin area and participated in raids on Ambon and Koepang. In all these actions he has displayed cool and distinguished conduct.^Sergeant Allen has conscientiously and willingly performed every service asked of him and has displayed considerable initiative in many self-imposed tasks. His example and courage have materially assisted in building up the high state of morale existing amongst his squadron Wireless/Air-Gunners.^Untiring in duty, Sergeant Allen has completed 406 operational hours against the enemy. He has displayed devotion to duty, whilst flying, far beyond the ordinary.^William Llewellyn Allen, clerk, born 14Feb1917 at Kadina, Sth Aust; Enl.07Dec1940 as AC2, at No.5 Recruiting Centre, Adelaide, Sth Aust, with previous service with AASC Remounts of 4 years; to LAC 04Jan1941; to Sgt 25Jul1941; to F/Sgt 01Aug1942; to Plt Off 01Oct1942; to Flg Off 01Apr1943; to Flt Lt 01Oct1944; various postings; WIA 23Jan1942 at Namlea, Netherlands East Indies (Note: An article in Wings magazine January 9, 1945 reads - 'F/Lt Lou Allen, DFM, gunnery leader, of Fullarton, SA, is another Hudson veteran. He took part in one of the freak battles of the war - against a Mavis, lumbering four engined Jap flying boat - fought with ball ammunition. No one shot anyone down, but several people got hurt. F/Lt Allen's turret was shot up, and he was wounded in the head and leg.); Disch.15May1946 as Flight Lieutenant ex 1 Operational Training Unit.^With research.
