CMG, MBE, MID Group of Eight: The Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George, Companion (CMG) neck badge (QC); The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KC), Member (MBE) (Military) (type 2); 1939-45 Star; Africa Star, - clasp - 8th Army; Italy Star; Defence Medal 1939-45; War Medal 1939-45 with MID; New Zealand War Service Medal 1939-1945. All medals unnamed as issued. The first on neck ribbon extremely fine, the rest swing mounted with some light contact marks on last three medals, otherwise very fine.

Leonard Bean was born 19 September 1914. He attended Takaka High School 1928-32 where he was Head of School, Captain of Rugby XV and Cricket XI. He attended the University of New Zealand 1933-36 graduating with a Master of Arts with 2nd Class Honours in History. He later attended 2nd Devonshire Course (Colonial Service) at Cambridge in 1951-52. After graduating from university in New Zealand he was a post-primary schoolmaster 1937-39.
In 1939 he enlisted in the NZEF and between 1940-45 he served in the UK, Western Desert, Tripolitania, Tunisia and Italy before he was demobilised in 1945 at the rank of Major. Between 1946 to 1957 he was a District Officer in the Provincial Administration, Northern Rhodesia holding appointments as District Commissioner, Assistant Secretary (Acting), and Provincial Commissioner (Acting). In 1957 to 1958 he was Senior District Officer Grade II and he also acted as Provisional Commissioner.
In 1957-61 he was Provisional Commissioner, 1961-65 Permanent Secretary serving successively in the following Ministries, Native Affairs; Chief Secretary's Office; Prime Minister's Office and Office of the President. During this period he also acted as Administrative Secretary; Minister of Native Affairs and Minister of Lands and Natural Resources. From April 1965 to February 1966 he was Adviser to the President of Zambia.
