Bedford, born 1921 at Leeds, UK; Date of Engagement 07Sep1940 at Melbourne, Vic; KIA 08Feb1943 as Fourth Engineering Officer when the Australian Merchant Navy iron-ore carrier S S Iron Knight was torpedoed and sunk by Japanese submarine I21, off Montague Island while going from Whyalla to Newcastle, with the loss of 36 of her company including her Captain and most officers; commemorated at the Sydney Memorial, NSW.
