MACEDON, Kingdom of, Alexander III, (336-323 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.78 g), Smyrna Mint, issued 220-200 B..C., obv. head of Herakles to right wearing lion skin with dotted border, rev. Zeus seated on throne to left, eagle in outstretched hand, turreted head of Tyche to left above monogram, to right **ALEXANDROU*, (cf.S.6713, cf.Price 2247-58 var, M. Autonomous Period VII unlisted monogram). Large flan and well centred, very fine/good very fine and extremely rare with this monogram, possibly unique.

Ex D.G.L.Worland Collection. Previously CNG eAuction 416, lot 237. Also Colin E. Pitchfork Collection, ex Noble 75 (31 March 2004), lot 1751, the David Worland Collection, Kurpfalzische Munzhandlung 62 (12 June 2002), lot 37. With CNG ticket.
This coin was struck from an obverse die that was used to strike tetradrachms of Price 2249-52.
