PTOLEMAIC KINGDOM OF EGYPT, Ptolemy I Soter, as satrap, in the name and type of Alexander III of Macedon, (336-323 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (17.16 g), Memphis or Alexandria Mint (Egypt), issued c. 322/1 B.C., obv. head of Herakles to right wearing lion skin with dotted border, rev. Zeus seated on throne to left, eagle in outstretched hand, rose to left, **DI* O under throne, to right **ALEXANDR[OU]*, (cf.S.6713, Price 3971, BMC 3971a-e, M.124, Demanhur hoard 4614ff., Zervos issue I, type 2C, SNG Cop 7, Gulbenkian 855). Lightly toned, test cut, good very fine with an attractive portrait and scarce in this condition.

Alexander tetradrachms marked with the rose symbol and the letters ?IO have long been admired as one of the most beautiful issues of his coinage. They were struck in Egypt, probably not long after Alexander's death on 10 June 323 BC.
