VICTORIA HUMANE SOCIETY, established 1874, in silver, clasp and suspension as issued (38mm), by J. Hogarth for Stokes & Martin or the Melbourne Branch of the Royal Mint, rev. inscribed 'Sam C. Candler/ 29 October 1875'. Toned, good extremely fine.

At 3pm on 29th October 1875 near the footbridge from Studley's Park to Parne Bend in the Yarra River a boy aged 7 years fell into the river, Samuel Curtin Candler, aged 50, the coroner for the County of Bourke, plunged into the river with all his clothes on and brought the boy, who had sunk twice, to the bank.^$$ ^Ex Spink Australia Sale 33 (lot 2676).
