PHOENICIA, Arados, (2nd-1st century B.C., but dated year 142 = 118/117 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (15.20 g), obv. turreted and veiled bust of Tyche to right dotted border, rev. Nike standing to left, holding aphlaston and palm-branch, **ARADIWN* to right, to left BMP (year 142 = 118-117 B.C.), over "Phoencian letter" over **DN*, all within laurel wreath, (S.5992, cf.SNG Cop. 48, cf.BMC 200, Kromann "Studies in Ancient History and Numismatics to Rudi Thomsen p.112 notes no specimens of this date and Phoenician letter). Lightly toned, good very fine and very rare.
Ex Dolphin Coins March 18, 1988. ^The study of this series of tetradrachms of Arados by Kromann in Thomsen (as above) shows that these civic tetradrachms began in 138/7 B.C., and continued until 44/3 B.C. She records only about 150 examples in her extensive survey.
