LAOS, People's Democratic Republic, Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, 8 April 1994, in bronze (40mm), similar to following medal but slightly different design and text in different place, obverse, national emblem of Lao PDR, reverse, Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge with scenes of Vientiane (Laos) at left and Nong Khai (Thailand) at right, above are the flags of Laos, Australia and Thailand. Slight toning, otherwise uncirculated.

Opened on 8 April 1994, this was the first bridge across the lower Mekong and the second on the full course of the Mekong River. The construction was funded by the Australian government as a development aid for Laos. It was designed and built by Australian companies. At the opening ceremony on 8 April 1994 the leaders presiding were Nuhak Phumsawan, the President of Lao PDR, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand and Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating. The bridge then opened for use on 23 April 1994. The following medal is attributed to John McLean ASC (Australian Cinematographers Society) who was cameraman for the Australian contingent that built the bridge.
