ANCIENT BRITISH, North Thames Region, Catuvellauni, Uninscribed coins, Ingoldisthorpe Zigzag type, (c.65-55 B.C.), gold stater, (6.40 g), obv. wreath motif with leaves facing downwards, rev. sinuous horse to right with short raised tail, oval shape below, small pellet daisy and large pellets above, triquetra in front, large pellet below, zigzag exergual line with pellets between, (S.20B var, ABC 2424, Van A -, NT 4-5, BMC -, M -). Toned, very heavy for issue, struck in good gold, full horse with clear triquetra, good very fine - nearly extremely fine and extremely rare.

Previously J.Fay Collection.^Only ten other examples are recorded of this extremely rare stater.^Ingoldisthorpe staters were among the first gold coins struck in Britain, as their heavy weight testify. This Ingoldisthorpe Triquetra has a lovely old toning and was unearthed many years ago. This is a famous, well documented stater. It was featured in Dr John Sill's important paper 'The ABC of Westerham gold' (Chris Rudd list 33, 1998, p.2-4, fig.6). It was also the plate coin in Spink's Coins of England from 2000 to 2005 (fig.20B).
