ANCIENT BRITISH, North Thames Region, Catuvellauni and Trinovantes, Inscribed coins, Cunobelinus Wild type, (c.8-41 A.D.), gold stater, (5.48 g), obv. ear of corn with central stalk, CA to left, MV to right, rev. wild horse leaping to right, short dashes for mane, branch above, CVN[O] below, (S.283, ABC 2777, Van A 1931, NT 8, BMC 1784-803, M 212). Nice smooth surfaces in attractive rose gold, full horse of fine style, nearly extremely fine/extremely fine and scarce.

Ex Anthony (Tony) Taylor Collection.^Noble Numismatics Sale 115, lot 4669. Previously a private purchase from Chris Rudd, list 114, #47.^^By 10 A.D., Cunobelinus ('hound of Belenus'), son of Tasciovanos and Cymbeline of Shakespeare, had united the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes. By 43 A.D., his family had control of the Cantiaci, Atrebates and Regini. Suetonius (Caligula 44) called him 'Britannorum Rex'.
