JULIUS CAESAR, (c.46 B.C.), silver denarius, uncertain mint, (4.140 grams), obv. Ceres head to right, around COS TERT DICT ITER, rev. simpulum, sprinkler, capis and lituus, AVGVR above, PONT MAX below, (S.1403 [£125 VF], Cr.467/1, Syd.1024, C. Julius Caesar 4 [£120]). Slightly off centred on the reverse, otherwise very fine and very scarce.

The issue was probably struck to pay his successful legions after the battle of Thapsus 6 April B.C. 46. The head of Ceres is emblematic of Africa.
