QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1899, (type 2 reverse), - eight clasps - Cape Colony, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902. 245 S-Gt. M.S.C.Barnes Australian Horse. Impressed. A few contact marks, otherwise toned very fine.

Sydney Charles Barnes, bank clerk, age 24, born at Cootamundra, NSW; Enl. In 1st Aust Horse as Temp S/Mjr; Emb.14Nov1899; Disemb.13Dec1899 at Cape Town; attached to Scots Greys, French's Cavalry Divn at Slingersfontein 16Jan1900; unit suffered heavy casualties including S/Mjr killed and Barnes promoted SSM 17Feb1900; served on most of units engagements; RTA and arrived 02May1901; discharged and took a position with Sydney Harbour Trust. Died 23Aug1940 at Manly, NSW.^With research.
