GROUP OF FIVE: Queen's South Africa Medal 1899, (type 2 reverse with faint ghost dates) - five clasps - Cape Colony, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19; Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers Decoration (GVR); Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal (GVR); Lieut: P.W.Vaughan, Australian Horse on first medal, Lieut-Col P.W.Vaughan. A.I.F. on second and third medals, Major (Hon. Lieut Col) P.W.Vaughan. Unatt. List on fourth medal and Major Vaughan, P.W.Unattached List 24/1918 on last medal. First three medals impressed, last two engraved. Extremely fine.

Together with loose Boer War MID silver attachment missing securing fitting on reverse; pre-federation 1st Australian Horse collar badge and AH badge; small b&w photo of Aust Horse soldier.^Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 72 (lot 2294).^MID in Boer War: LG 10/9/1901, page 5967, position 9. ^Percy William Vaughan, born 28May1871 in Hereford, England; son of Rev J.Vaughan of Summer Hill, NSW and educated at Sydney Grammar; Enl. in 2nd contingent of Australian Horse as 2Lieut while serving in Australia as a Sgt in reserves and while a bank manager at a bank in Braidwood, a town in country NSW; served in early engagements and horse shot from under him at Diamond Hill; RTA 13Dec1900; WWI: Hon Col in Newcastle for defence of Port in 1914; Enl.21Oct1915 in Sydney, NSW as Major commanding HQ Infantry Base; Emb.27Nov1915; trf to 2 Aust Div Base Depot in France as Officer Commanding; to Lt-Col 01Nov1916; to 1AGH 10Jun1917 with paralysis of lower vocal cord; many physicians involved including a copy of a letter from Surgeon General, Sir Neville Howse, KCB, VC, Headquarters AIF; RTA 10Oct1917 Medically Unfit with chronic laryngitis but was still shipboard OC; appointment terminated 21Mar1918 but continued on Unattached List and Reserve of Officers post war until retired on 28May1931 as Colonel. ^With copy of WWI Service File and other research.
