SEVERUS ALEXANDER (A.D. 222-235), restitution issue under Trajan Decius (A.D. 249-251), silver antoninianus, issued 249-251, Rome mint, (3.840 grams), obv. radiate head to right of Severus Alexander around DIVO ALEXANDRO, rev. lighted altar, CONSECRATIO around, (S.2283, RSC 597 [Severus Alexander]). Nearly extremely fine and scarce.
These restitution issues of Trajan Decius are of selected deified emperors and the contemporary judgement on past emperors made at this time which excluded some like Claudius but included others such as Severus Alexander and suprisingly even Commodus. The typology of the series is uniform both for obverse style and the reverse legend and subject theme.
