MACEDON, Demetrios I Poliorketes, (306-283 B.C.), silver drachm, (4.17 g), Ephesos Mint, struck c.301-295 B.C.), obv. diademed and horned head right, rev. Poseidon Pelagaios standing left, preparing to throw trident, on left arm a chlamys, monogram to left, upward ivy leaf to inner left, to right downwards **DHMHTRIOU*, below across **BA SILEWU*, (S.6766, Newell 57d = Pozzi 967 [same dies], SNG Munich -, SNG Alpha Bank -, SNG Berry -, Boston MFA Supp. 51 (same rev. die), cf.HGC 3.1, 1019). Good very fine - nearly extremely fine, a very rare portrait drachm.
Ex CNG Triton IX (lot 815) January 10-11, 2006, previously coming from the Robert Weimer Collection and the Dr. J.S. Wilkinson Collection, Malter 49, 15 November 1992, (lot 261). Dmitry Markov notes that only a handful of portrait drachms are known. The Pozzi example in near EF, coming from the same dies realised $7000 in CNG Sale 106 (lot 217), 13 September 2017. ^
