SPAIN, Charles III, silver eight reales, 1784, uncertain mint and moneyer, sea salvage from the wreck of the East Indiaman Hartwell. Salt water corrosion particularly on reverse, nearly fine.

Ex Alan McRae Collection, with his display ticket.^^The Hartwell wrecked and sunk on the 24th May 1787 following a mutiny onboard. Whilst attempting to sail for the Cape Verde islands to hand over the mutineers to the authorities, it ran onto a reef near the island of Boa Vista where she broke up and sank. ^
