AUGUSTUS, (27 B.C. - A.D. 14), fine cast copy of AE dupondius, Rome mint, type issued 7 B.C. by M. Maecilius Tullus, (14.16 grams), obv. laureate head to left of Augustus crowned by Victory bearing cornucopia in left hand, around CAESAR AVG[VST PONT] MAX TRIBVNIC POT, rev. most of M MAECILIVS TVLLVS III VIR A A A F F around large SC, (cf.S.506, RIC 433, C.540, CBN 652, BMC 218, Ash. 590 [cast of this specimen]). Good very fine.

Ex Colin E. Pitchfork Collection, Noble Numismatics Sale 56 (lot 2130). This piece initially looks good but closer examination shows evidence of casting holes in the field as well as a larger hole, the edge appears filed although rather toned. The piece is identical to that in the Ashmoleum collection cited above from which the mold for this piece was made. Very interesting example of the rarest bronze issue of Augustus.
