CAMPBELL, James, Morpeth silver threepence, undated (issued 1854) (A.685) struck by J.C. Thorthwaite, believed only 400 struck. Even grey toned, tiny graffiti scratches on the reverse otherwise, nearly extremely fine and very rare, one of the finest known.

Ex Spink Australia Sales 1 (lot 396) and 18 (lot 957). The late A.H. Baldwin (founder of the London firm) wrote in his notebook (now in our library) that he exchanged one of his two Campbell threepences with Lionel L. Fletcher in 1927 for a Mason and Culley penny, a Bell and Gardner penny and cash N/-/-! this would value such a piece today at $40,000.

Estimate / sale price does not include buyer's premium (currently 22% including GST) which is added to hammer price. All bids are executed on the understanding that the Terms & Conditions of sale have been read and accepted. For information on grading and estimates please refer to the Buying at Auction advice.
