SYRIA, Kingdom of, Antiochus II, (261-246 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.456 grams), Series I, Sardes mint, issued 261-250 B.C., obv. diademed head of Antiochus I to right, rev. Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow and bow, on right, **BASILEWS and to left **[A]NTIOXOU, in exergue monograms of **PN AI*, (cf.S.6886, Newell WSM 1387 [Pl.LVI, 2-3], ACNAC Houghton 597, Hunter 27 [p.15]). Some surface porosity, with high relief, otherwise very fine and rare.
Newell notes a total of 4 tetradrachms of this type in public and private collections.
