PHILIPPICUS, (711-713), gold solidus, Constantinople mint, issued 711-3, (4.270 grams), officina **G*, obv. bust facing of Philippicus with short beard beard, wearing loros and crown, holding cross on globe and eagle-tipped sceptre, around **D N FILEPICUS MULTUS AN, rev. cross potent on base and three steps, below CONOB, around VICTORIA AVGU**QG*, (S.1449 [£1400 EF], BMC 6 = T.10 [only other noted example], [DOW 3b]). With some mint bloom, weak on small parts of the legend, otherwise extremely fine and a very rare variety.
