SOLD $40

CARIA, uncertain mint, (5th century B.C.), silver tetartemorion, (0.170 grams), obv. forepart of lion to left, rev. bird (quail) within incuse square to left, (S.-, SNG Berry II 1046 [Asia Minor uncertain], SNG Von Aulock 7808, SNG Keckman 927). Off centred on the obverse, otherwise very fine and very rare.

SNG Berry has an extensive discussion on the type of bird on the reverse, Bellinger believes it to be a bustard, Berry believes it to be a quail, M&M listing describes it as a dove and attribute it to Miletus in Ionia. The denomination is more likely on weight to be a tetartemorion.
