SOLD $150

CHARLES I, (1625-1649), Aberystwyth mint, silver threepence, Thomas Bushell's mint, mm book, issued 1638/9-1642, (S.2894). Has been carefully plugged on the king's crown, (probably from the recoinage in 1696), otherwise fine, scarce.

G.E. Challis 'The New History of the Royal Mint' p.383 states 'All government receivers were authorised to accept clipped money `as if such moneys were unclipped', unless it were obviously counterfeit, until 4 May.... To prevent further clipping of decent hammered money, anyone possessing such coin was, before 10 February 1696 or prior to passing it back into circulation, to cause each piece `to be struck through about the middle of every piece with a solid punch that shall make a hole without diminishing the silver'. After 10 February no unclipped money, (..greater part of legend viusible) was to pass current unless it was punched through.

Estimate / sale price does not include buyer's premium (currently 22% including GST) which is added to hammer price. All bids are executed on the understanding that the Terms & Conditions of sale have been read and accepted. For information on grading and estimates please refer to the Buying at Auction advice.
