FRANCE, Louis XIV, (1643-1715), silver half ecu, traces of date 1703, mostly missing because of overstrike type c.1701-4, uncertain mint, but overstruck on 1691 cruciform 8 L's with crown at each end of uncertain mint, obv. bust of Louis XIV to right, rev. crown over circular shield, (KM.325/273, Gad.189/184). With very strong overstriking with much of the undertype discernable and possibly further undertypes, attractive grey and traces of blue and gold patina, weak in places, otherwise nearly extremely fine and very scarce.
