SAFFARID, a-Husayn b. Tahir, (A.H. 359-360, 360-361) (A.D. 970-971, 971-972), gold fractional dinar, not dated, but from Sijistan mint, c.A.H. 360 = A.D. 971, (A.1416, M.-). Full strike but lacking margins as usual, very fine and very rare ruler.

The Saffarids have a dynastic name that derives from the profession of the founder who had been a coppersmith (saffar in Persian) before turning to military adventure. The empire lasted from A.H.253 until it was conquered by the Seljuqs in A.H.440. The dynasty was later restored and survived until the Mongol invasions.
