BANK OF NEW SOUTH WALES, five pounds, issued at Sydney, April 1, 1881, (18 printed), No.A/A 194124, hand signed by Manager W.B. Hawthorne and entered by J.H. Potts, printed on watermarked paper 'BANK OF NEW SOUTH WALES' within saw toothed multiple line frame, with imprint in centre of bottom, 'Charles Skipper & East, London', with vignettes of female seated with produce and in top corners oval framed tablet with FIVE, all within rectangular ornate spiral border with NEW SOUTH WALES in frame, back with large 5 within oval surrounded by a ornate circles in each corner, blue on white, (New England Hoard No. 79 [Report of ANS 1974 yearbook, pp.49-68], Vort-Ronald, p.67-85 on bank, and similar note illustrated as Fig.78, Tomlinson p.24 illustrates five pound note of type). Folds and creases, minor pencil markings on back, otherwise very fine and rare.

Ex New England Hoard (No.79). The Bank of New South Wales five pound notes of this type all come from the New England Hoard of 1971, [Pitchfork & Freehill, 'A Significant Hoard of Nineteenth Century Australian Commercial Banknotes' [ANS 1974 Yearbook], where some 60 five pound notes were found out of a total hoard of 123 banknotes of mostly five pound denomination.
