THRACE, Kingdom of, Lysimachus, (323-281 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (17.02 grams), Lampsacus mint, issued c.297/6-282/1 B.C., obv. head of Alexander to right, with diadem and horn of Ammon, within dotted border, rev. Athena enthroned to left, supporting Nike, **DI monogram in inner left field, crescent in exergue, to left **BASILEWS* to right **LUSIMAXOU*, (cf.S.6814, Thompson 49, M.399, SNG Cop. 1097, McLean 4488, SNG Lockett 1249). Well centred and with a very high relief, a superb eye, nearly extremely fine/good very fine and very scarce.
Ex Bunker Hunt Collection, sold Sotheby's New York, June 19, 1991 (lot 538 part). This issue is very close in style to the beautiful issues from the Pergamon mint struck by the artist who simply signed his coinage 'K'. $$ Ex. Spink & Son, London, September 1997. The Pergamon mint issues of Lysimachus are considered to be the finest numismatic portraiture of Alexander III.
