ZEUGITANIA, Carthage, (c.350-320 B.C.), gold stater, (9.408 grams), obv. head of Tanit to left, crowned with wreath of corn, wearing earring with triple pendants and necklace, dotted border, rev. free horse standing to right, double exergue line below, three dots before horse's front leg, dot under left part of body, traces of letters? in exergue, dotted border, (S.6445, Jenkins Group IIIa-b mule [a variant not noted in Jenkins cf.p.78-9], SNG Cop. 973, Paris De Luynes 3737). Nearly extremely fine an unpublished variant.
Ex New York sale Auction II, December 2, 1999 (lot 137, illustrated). The series with the traces of 'letters' in exergue was the subject of a feature article in 'The Celator' Vol. 13, No.12, December 1999 (p.17-21) by Mark A. McMenamin 'What's in a Name? Decipherment of a Carthaginian Exergue Inscription.'
