ZEUGITANIA, Carthage, (c.215-208 B.C.), billon tridrachm or one and a half shekel, (10.234 grams), obv. head of Tanit to left, crowned with wreath of corn, wearing earring with single pendant and necklace, rev. free horse standing to right, palm tree with fruit behind, (cf.S.6494, Jenkins [Pl.27, 8 places date at 240-230 B.C. p.135 but for a higher quality silver example, SNG Cop. 190-1 [dates 264-241 B.C.] but more likely SNG Cop. 351, Antike Museum and Ludwig Collection Basel 1988 exhibition, No.571 [p.157, illustrated, This Coin, c.245 B.C.], Visona 51 [illustrates a similar example and dates 215-208 B.C.]). Small flan, very base, well centred, good very fine and scarce.

Ex Basel Museum Exhibition Catalogue; Numismatic Ars Classica Auction Sale 13, October 8, 1998 (lot 571 realised 378 SFr); and from Classical Numismatic Group, privately 1998 with ticket. Although this coin in the Basel Collection reference noted above suggest an earlier date the cataloguer believes the issue to be of c.215-208 B.C. as noted in Visona number 51.
