SULTANS OF DELHI, Shamsu-D-Din Iltutmish, (607-633 A.H., 1210-1235 A.D.), silver tankah, (10.61 grams), Bengal mint issue under Governor Hisam-D-Din Iwaz, issued [614-616 A.H.], obv. Turkish horseman to left with mace, Kalina legend around, rev. five line legend, (The Victorious Sultan Shamsu-D-Din wa ud din Abul Muzafar Iltutmish Commander of the Faithful), (Wright 49J [Plate XXII], cf. IMC 32, Hull 44, Rajgor 845). Very rare in silver for this horseman type and only known from a few specimens, nearly very fine with some flat areas, but equal to most other known tankahs of this horseman type.
Ex. Buckland, Dix and Woods, Auction Sale 4, March 16, 1994 (lot 697 illustrated). Iltutmish, the architect of an independent Delhi Sultanbate, issued tankahs of both pictorial and calligraphic type. Surviving examples of the unusual horseman type are generally crudely struck and somewhat worn.
